Pulmonary Rehabilitation Course

Pulmonary Rehab Course – FREE Community Based Course – just phone and ask for a referral from your Medical Centre.

This is an evidence based exercise and education programme designed to help people with chronic respiratory conditions to improve their ability to cope with their shortness of breath and their symptoms.  Contact your medical professional to see if this course is suitable for you, just ask for a Pulmonary Rehab course referral.

The course goes for six to eight weeks, with sessions held twice during each week.  In Tasman these courses are held three times a year.  They are delivered by the Nelson Asthma Society and Nelson Bays Primary Health’s Respiratory Nurse.  Guest speakers can include a Respiratory Specialist and other medical professionals.   Each session goes for 2 hours, the first hour is a light exercise circuit followed with a cuppa and then an hour of information sharing.

What ACTUALLY is COPD ?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease – if you have COPD is means breathing passages (airways) in your lungs are blocked and your lung tissue is damaged.

Symptoms of COPD include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing, especially with exercise
  • A cough
  • Presence of phlegm
  • Winter bronchitis
  • Wheezing

Tell your doctor or nurse if you have any of these symptoms and they may do a Spirometry test.
